Cape Guild of Weavers Proves Craft Matters in a Digital Era
April 13, 2026 By Andie Reeves
Founded in 1950, the Cape Guild of Weavers has grown into a vibrant, multigenerational community dedicated to preserving handcraft skills, connecting makers, and keeping traditional textile arts alive in a digital world.
With more than 75 years of history, the Guild nurtures, teaches, and promotes weaving and related crafts while building respect for natural materials and traditional making.
What Draws People to Weaving?
Weaving links people to ancient traditions and offers a meaningful alternative to mass-produced, synthetic fast fashion. Creating handmade cloth, linens, curtains, or rugs brings self-reliance, pride, and accomplishment.
In a digital age, handcrafts provide calm, mindfulness, and connection to nature and community. Working with natural fibres helps people stay grounded and reconnect with their humanity.
Who Belongs to the Guild & What It Does
The Guild has around 180 members from across South Africa, run by volunteer leaders. It supports weaving, spinning, dyeing, felting, knitting, crochet, bead weaving, lace-making, and macramé.
